barns of warwick
I introduced my 8th grade students to the work of Eric Sloane. His barns are just stunning.
We discussed how relevant his work is to us in Warwick, NY as there are many barns all around us in our own backyard landscapes.
We also discussed perspective, a very important principle of art that many people struggle with accomplishing in their work. They understand the idea but actually translating that onto the paper is a whole different "view." The students learned all about the horizon line, vanishing point and creating depth in their drawings.
We used pen and ink to create stippling, shading and crosshatching within the drawings to create value. The black and white create contrast that really draws your eye into the drawings. These important drawing methods can now be translated into their sketchbooks as well which is ideal!
The barns came out great and I do recognize some local barns as well as students' unique and creative ideas!
I am very pleased with the results and these fun barnscapes are adorning our halls now.
Be Well and Enjoy!
