This weekend we made a great trip to The Brooklyn Flea. This is such a great venue for art and fantastic finds. I was able to pick up a few great goodies myself!
When we first arrived I happened upon this fantastic mural painted on a wall. It inspired me for sure as a great abstract yet functional and colorful work in my classroom for the fall. This mural had a purpose as you can see in the photo, it was a map! Viola! It really caught my eye and my destination!
I have posted some pictures of my absolute favorite artists of the day. The first is a textile artist, Kate Durkin, who does hand embroidery on fabric. She was extremely pleasant as was her work. I loved the simple clean lines in her animals and we all know birds are my favorite, so I just adored the owls.
The bicycle made me think of my dear friend Jen and so I snapped this pic with her in mind! I chatted with her for a bit and she handed me her card which were super fun and had a hummingbird on them.... I knew I liked her... wink,wink.... you can find her work at www.katedurkin.com
Next I found these divine wheel thrown porcelain cups by S K T Ceramics. It is hard to find unique functional clay works and these certainly grabbed my eye. Again, my love for birds drew me in right away to this adorable little chick. The animals were beautifully carved and then glazed over. I really loved the black carvings in contrast to the milky glazed washes on the overall cups. I was ready to grab one and have a spot of tea. You can find more about Susannah's work at www.susannahtisue.com
There was an array of food so making a day out of it is just grand and will certainly tempt your taste buds with all of the fresh homemade treats and beverages. The entire area was covered with great people and finds including antique furniture, rugs, tapestries, records and much, much more! I cannot wait to get back!
On these beautiful weekends find some time to visit the "big apple" and take a closer look at the art and artists in your own neighborhood! Click on the title of this post and you will be directed to the site for The Brooklyn Flea.
Be Well and Enjoy!
