Come out this Sunday, September 25, 2011 to the Warwick Valley High School in Warwick, NY and support our community farmers in need.
FEMA declared Orange County a "Disaster Area" due to the effects of Hurricane Irene however, there is nothing in either the federal or state programs that covers crop losses. Millions of dollars in crop losses were sustained by Warwick's farms in Pine Island and Florida. These same farms supply New York City's green markets (including Union Square and others in the five boroughs), as well as some of the top restaurants. The amount of water that overflowed the Wallkill River levees was so great that it now places the viability of the region in jeopardy.
I was asked to help support our local farmers and their families and I am happy to be of help. First, I am donating a piece of my personal art along with six student created works of art for silent auction. Then my husband Brian and I are working with some students to help out on Sunday at the event working with visitors to "paint our appreciation" to the Town of Warwick firefighters, police, EMS, and DPW. In this post you can see some of the works being donated.
If you are unable to attend this important community event, you can make a tax-deductible charitable donation to support this cause, please write a check payable to "Community 2000" (a recognized 501(c)(3) charitable organization), put "Farm Aid 2011" as a notation in the memo line and mail it to: Community 2000, Inc., PO Box 1270, Warwick, NY 10990.
